New Mobile Suit Gundam Manga/Will Giant Robots continue to rule Anime/Manga?

The August issue (on sale on June 26) of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Gundam Ace magazine has launched Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Aoi Kioku (Blue Memories), Tarō Shiguma's new manga series based on the Gundam 00 anime television series. The magazine summarizes how the manga will deal with the lives of the Gundam Meister pilots by saying, "The present and the past…fiction and memories…the true selves of the boys will be revealed." The first installment, "Memory: 1 Setsuna," covers the memories of the main protagonist Setsuna's early childhood.

So lots of people love the Gundam series and it’s been going strong since the 80’s. Lots of Japanese Manga and Anime have storylines based around giant human-piloted robots. A lot of these series are very individualized and have great stories behind them. They are as classic in Japan as “B-movie slashers” are in America. And even with general idea remaining the same, this “genre” continues to go strong. But unlike “slashers”, giant-robot anime is yet to see any downward trend. We’re curious as to your opinion. Do you think that robot anime will forever stay strong? Or is this overplayed concept well overdue to crash and burn?
