Anime and Manga Network

Not sure if anyone of you has ever seen Red vs. Blue, but it is a series that is filmed using the Halo series as a means of animation. What started off as a simple viral video series has turned into a major business/international Webisode show. This form of media is called Machinima meaning machine cinema, in which someone uses pre-rendered CGI (i.e. video games) to make a film. Though this isn’t necessarily anime, it still feels like it would fall under this category.

Ok, so there isn’t any direct correlation. One could say they both typically have action and/or comedy, but there are many things that fall under that category; animated or not. Then one could argue that voice acting is involved. Again, any animation or dubbed series could fit this description. The key factor though that ties Machinima to Anime would be the unique story.

Anime is known for it’s over the top story that typically tells of some mystical or highly technological adventure. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Gundam, Naruto, Dragonball, etc.; all of these series have some element to them that makes them other worldly. It has something that movies can’t really capture. Even regular Western animation can’t quite capture it. That’s what Machinima does as well. The Halo universe can be presented in other medias (i.e. film, artwork, comics, etc.) but nothing will ever capture the magic of the Halo universe like the actual games will. This is what Machinima allows one to do: bring these unique universes in their own, pure and original form and create equally as unique stories to go along with them.

If you are unacquainted with Machinima, check out redvsblue.com. Highly recommended. The have multiple series outside of the Halo universe as well.
