Anime Review: Vampire Knight

Welcome to a world where humans and vampires have made a truce to try and maintain peace between the two races. The cornerstone for this pact resides in the Cross Academy where human students attend during the day, and vampire students attend at night. At the same time, two students, Yuuki and Zero serve as prefects, students who attend the Day class, but patrol the school grounds at night to make sure no vampires attack any humans. Welcome to the world of Vampire Knight.

This story is truly an loves story disguised as a horror/action story. While there is a few cool scenes, they are few and far in between. There are illusions to the vampires have various magical powers, but you rarely ever see them get used. As a matter of fact, the story takes about vampire duels as well as vampire hunting, but you don’t ever really get a chance to see this. Instead, the story follows Yuuki as she is caught in a love triangle between Zero (the other prefect and human turned vampire), and Kaname, a pure-blooded vampire and elite among his kind. While both seem to be in love with Yuuki, there is a hidden motive behind Kaname’s affections that never truly gets addressed.

Long story short, the artwork is great, but the plot is kind of lacking. The ideas are there, but they don’t really come totally to fruition. It’s fine being a romantic anime if that’s what its about, but they keep hinting at other stuff and never really talk about it. It always comes back to Yuuki not being able to make up her mind about Zero and Kaname. Rumors are that season two will get into a more in depth story & further development of the vampires, but until then, I would suggest waiting.
