Anime and Manga Network

Last post, I mentioned the connection between the classics and the new shows. At the same time, they should not be confused with one another. Some successors are actually pretty good at carrying on in a legacy of quality programming. But not all unofficial sequels are good ones.

For example, everyone says that hip-hop is dying; I am inclined to agree. If you have ever heard UGK, Dr. Dre, Mac Dre, The Luniz, The Pharcyde, or even an artist as recent as Eminem, you understand that hip-hop was an amazing entity at one point. Even though current artists like Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Lupe Fiasco are still producing the same amazing work as those aforementioned, other current artists like Soulja Boy are quickly killing the industry. The same could be said about anime.

Naruto is actually not bad as far as the cheesy over the top anime. In many respects it even improves in some places where something like DBZ failed (by omitting a few of the episode long dialogues about how the planet was going to explode in a minute). At the same time, that doesn’t mean that current shows don’t have issues (Naruto’s filler storyline that spanned almost 200 episodes). And then there are shows that don’t work at all (Digimon, Yugiho GX, the show with chibi Gundam, Totally Spies, etc.). Maybe it just looks like I’m picking on kids anime and that I’ve outgrown such shows, but I cherish my childhood programming and feel like current shows don’t live up to their standards. Just because times have changed, doesn’t mean that today’s youth should be robbed of the same full life.

So in that regard, if you haven’t seen an anime that’s been produced prior to the new millennium, please do yourself a favor and go look up some of the classics. I realize that anime as well as hip-hop go deeper than the 90’s and in some regards that I’m inexperienced to even greater works. But do not just use a criticism of my experience to deter you for doing yourself a favor. History is important; there is a reason they tried to drill it into you in high school.
