This weekend, Adult Swim just wrapped up the Death Note: a very popular series in Japan. Death Note is a story about a young man named Light Yagumi who finds a mysterious notebook. Upon touching the notebook, a Shinigami (God of Death) appears to him and tells him that whatever name is written in the notebook, that person will die. From then on, Light uses the notebook to purge the world of evil-doers. As time passes, the public takes notice of these killings and proclaims there must be some div… Continue

Support the Classics pt. 2

Last post, I mentioned the connection between the classics and the new shows. At the same time, they should not be confused with one another. Some successors are actually pretty good at carrying on in a legacy of quality programming. But not all unofficial sequels are good ones. For example, everyone says that hip-hop is dying; I am inclined to agree. If you have ever heard UGK, Dr. Dre, Mac Dre, The Luniz, The Pharcyde, or even an artist as recent as Eminem, you understand that hip-hop was an… Continue

Support the Classics pt. 1

So being one of the writers for “Anime News”, I’ve been trying very hard to keep the blogs from being a personal statement, but I can’t help but use the first person for this. So two days ago, my siblings were in town and my future brother-in-law noticed that I was into anime and asked me about the new live action Dragonball movie. The conversation soon turned into a nostalgia session and I went through the entire series with him in great detail. And then I realized what these classic animes hav… Continue

Machinima: Anime?

Not sure if anyone of you has ever seen Red vs. Blue, but it is a series that is filmed using the Halo series as a means of animation. What started off as a simple viral video series has turned into a major business/international Webisode show. This form of media is called Machinima meaning machine cinema, in which someone uses pre-rendered CGI (i.e. video games) to make a film. Though this isn’t necessarily anime, it still feels like it would fall under this category. Ok, so there isn’t any di… Continue

One of the First American Animes

So, first post right? Ok so let’s talk about Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks which is considered one of the first great American animes. McGruder originally produced The Boondocks as a comic strip in daily papers nationwide. Even then, the strip’s art design was based in a manga style. But one of the key things that McGruder does with his anime that is very different from classic animes is the content within. McGruder still includes all of the wonderful things we love about anime: action, big ex… Continue
